We recycle paper cranes which are a legacy of Hiroshima.
Threads from folded paper cranes are used to make durable canvas, with the story of the folded paper cranes and the message of peace connecting the thoughts and feelings of Hiroshima to the world.
As a company rooted in its home town of Hiroshima, SPINGLE has been developing an ongoing initiative since 2022 to send a message of peace by reproducing origami cranes donated to Peace Memorial Park and other places on the uppers of its trainers. The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing and the end of the war. The ‘Paper Crane Recycled Sneakers’ will be delivered from Hiroshima to the world as a product with a renewed message of hope.
This special pair uses threads recycled from paper cranes donated to Hiroshima that have completed their role in prayer, and are made into an original canvas upper. The yarn recycled from paper cranes, ‘origami crane rayon yarn’, was initially a very delicate material. However, by blending it with cotton yarn, we were able to create a canvas fabric that was strong enough to be used in trainers, and we worked with a fabric manufacturer for more than a year to develop it. It is strong and supple, with a smooth touch that is different from cotton canvas and produces a comfortable fit.
The design and details, such as the colorful origami crane pattern branding on the shoe tongue and the custom-made hemp-blend laces, are finished with Spingle's thoughts on peace. The lining is made from recycled material, which is also odour-resistant, antibacterial and sweat-absorbent, keeping the inside of the shoes in a comfortable environment. The outsole uses the RUBEAR CNF sole, which was developed in-house and contains environmentally friendly material cellulose nanofibres, improving abrasion resistance by approximately 40% (compared to our conventional sole) and allows the shoes to be worn for even longer.
Inspired by the nature of Hiroshima, with its flowers, fruits, the sea and islands of the Setouchi region, the shoes are dyed and named using pigment names which have been used since ancient times as the traditional colors of Japan. The seven colors are inspired by the rainbow, a symbol of peace.
